54% of mobile workers check phones while driving

by Administrator 11. March 2010 17:49

A new survey has revealed that an alarming number of mobile workers check their mobile devices while driving.

CareBuilder surveyed more than 5,200 mobile workers last year and found 54% admitted to regularly checking their mobile devices whilst driving. Interestingly, the figures varied depending on the workers' professions.

Sales workers were the worst offenders; 66% admitted to checking their mobile devices, while 54% of business service workers held their hands up to the crime. Surprisingly, a large number of health workers have also confessed to dangerous driving: 50%.

What's their excuse? The large majority of offenders say they feel constant pressure from work to answer their smartphone, no matter what they are doing. 18% said they check their phone every time it vibrates, further reinforcing the idea that the world is caught in the grip of mobile addiction.

The survey also highlighted the fact that it's not driving when mobile workers stop to check their smartphones.

62% check when eating a meal, 60% check when on holiday, 17% check when working out at the gym and 11% admit to checking their smartphone while at church.

"The lines between work and [home] life can be very blurry these days - 17 percent of workers said they feel like their work day never ends because of technology connecting them to the office," said Rosemary Haefner from CareBuilder. "To reduce burnout and avoid potentially risky behavior, workers should allot technology-free time when away from work."
