Telephone giant BT have this week launched their one millionth WiFi hotspot in the UK.
The firm now lays claim to the title of owning the country's most extensive WiFi network after it doubled it's hotspots from 500,000 6 months ago to hit the one million mark this year.
Although one million hotspots might seem a bit excessive to some, it's clear there's an obvious demand for them as more and more people use wireless internet on the go across the UK and Ireland.
The expansion is being put down to the success of BT's Openzone access deals which are available to iPhone customers on networks such as Orange, Vodafone and O2 as well as the increased traffic on smart-phones.
BT Openzone hotspots are available in many retail and hotel chains including the Hilton, Welcome Chef, Cafe Nero and Starbucks Coffee.
And it seems the rise of mobile devices is not about the stop any time soon. BT are expecting smart-phone users to have spent more than one billion WiFi minutes on their mobile devices between April 2009 and April 2010, with the number set to soar even higher in the next 6 months.
"Whether at home, at work or when out and about, wireless access is central to keeping people and communities better connected," said Gavin Patterson, chief executive officer at BT Retail. "We've grown from 500,000 to one million hotspots within six months, and will continue to add more to meet demand from smart-phone, laptop, iPod and now e-reader users."
This increase in WiFi hotspots can only be a good thing for virtual desktop users who can now access their documents in more places than ever before.
