BumpTop, a company that specialize in a new type of virtual desktop, has recently been purchased by Google for use in mobile computers.
BumpTop offer a new format for the virtual desktop, where files and icons can be piled, moved around or grouped together rather than just filed in the standard grid format.
The technology is creating a stir and some believe that it will make Blackberry’s redundant for office users.
The company was founded by Anand Agarawala who did his master’s thesis in the negative aspects of filing. He suggested that filling is tiresome and inefficient, whereas piling increases the accessibility and usability of files.
At present the technology has only been applied to Windows and Mac desktops but Google has plans to adapt it for virtual and mobile purposes. Experts believe the technology will be more suited to the smartphone, as it will easily mimic the spatial aspects of real-world desktops.
Therefore BumpTop is thought to be extremely beneficial for iphone and Anroid sales, especially as the technology will make them more suited to business users. This is because currently iphone and Anroid nowhere near match the functionality of other virtual desktop solutions, however with this upgrade they will become leading contenders in the office market.
The major benefits will be an easier use of office based functions, such as Excel spreadsheets, PDFs, documents and emails. Making these features easier to use and access will make desktops more user-friendly by removing the logistical stiffness currently associated with Android and iPhones.
As a result the technology may increase the functionality of virtual desktops in years to come.
