Up until 5 years ago working wirelessly on the go was virtually unheard of. Nowadays, it's very unlikely that you'll be able to go on any mode of public transport without seeing somebody using the internet on a mobile device.
While the rise of WiFi has undoubtedly been a great thing for the mobile worker and has spurned great initiatives such as the virtual desktop, there are also a few negatives that can be associated with using wireless internet.
PROS:
- Flexibility: Because of the rise of WiFi hotspots, you can now work wirelessly in a wide variety of environments around the world. WiFi allows you to be flexible without the need to be tied down to an internet cable. WiFi allows you to work on the move, increasing productivity and efficiency.
- Easy collaboration: The joys of WiFi mean you can collaborate effortlessly with other users on a number of projects. WiFi allows you to collaborate on presentations with colleagues while waiting for a plane or staying in a hotel room.
- Time-saving: Because you can use WiFi on the go, it means you no longer have to wait to return to the office to type up your notes. WiFi allows you to get the job done then and there, eliminating annoying waiting periods.
CONS:
- Security: Because WiFi hotspots are public, there is often a high risk of security breaches. This is because there are no passwords, meaning anyone can log onto the same network and access your files. As you can imagine, this isn't a great option when working with highly confidential files.
- Coverage: While there are a growing number of WiFi hotspots in the UK, there are still large areas of the country which remain uncovered by wireless internet. For this reason you might lose connection when going through the country on a train. This means WiFi can sometimes be unreliable, which is not great when you rely on it to complete your job.
- Transmission speeds: Because WiFi hotspots are being used by hundreds of people at a time, sometimes the transmission speed can fluctuate and can often remain very slow. This unpredictability means you'll often struggle to finish your work in the designated time.
