Virtual desktop helps to catch criminals in Lancashire

A Lancashire Constabulary has recently installed a virtual desktop system in order to become more efficient with the administration of staff and suspects.

The system will allow the station to have better control of sensitive data, such as crime scene photos, criminal profiles and case specifics.

Experts have said that the system is ideally placed within the station as it ensures that staff have the right level of clearance before accessing restricted files.

Colin Fitzsimons, a systems engineer at the station, said that the virtual desktop allows officers to maintain confidentiality and yet have easier and more flexible access to police records. The system also gives officers complete access to the Lancashire Constabulary's main network, enabling them to have up to date records from a variety of Lancashire police stations. All of which is only accessible via a login, for security purposes.

Virtual desktop technology is expected to have a significant effect on the way that the police conduct investigations, allowing police officers to be more versatile and efficient when investigating a crime.

Mr Fitzsimons said, "The speed at which our officers are able to view data from the network on their desktop is also beneficial as it improves productivity and increases workflow."

As well as being beneficial for cracking a case, the system will allow the police to be more cost effective and efficient. With these benefits it is clear that virtual desktops can add a lot of value to the police and to other office-based and administrable organisations.
